Don't Be 'Shingled' Out When Making Roofing Decisions!
Given today’s economy, more and more Americans are finding they'll be staying in their homes longer than they anticipate, which means proper care and upgrades are the best way to protect your investment. JoAnne Liebeler, former co-host of HomeTime on PBS and GAF Material Corporation join Designing Spaces to give great tips and advice to keep you on ‘top’ of the roofing industry!
Everyone at some point and time has been exposed to a horror story or two about bad roofing jobs. So, how do you avoid being one of those stories AND know you’re making a good roofing decision?
No one wants a roofing disaster because it puts their most valuable asset, their home, at risk. To help put your mind at ease JoAnne has four valuable tips when buying a new roof:
• Picking the right shingle that will protect and increase the resale value of their home
• Making sure that the contractor installs a complete roofing system
• Choosing the right warranty to protect their investment
• Choosing the right contractor. You can do everything else right, but if you choose the wrong contractor, you can have real disaster.
A new roof is more than just nailing up some new shingles; it’s a system of components that work together to protect your home. These include products that will protect your roof deck, which includes the plywood under the shingles. The best roof deck protection breathes to help let moisture escape and prolong the life of your roof deck; waterproof leak barriers help seal the vulnerable areas of the roof like eaves and valleys; and very importantly-- attic ventilation.
Finally, a roof will never look completely finished unless it has the right ridge cap. You’d be surprised how many people match the wrong ridge cap to their shingles– you should always buy the corresponding product from the shingle manufacturer.
