Hidden Hazards in Every Living Space
The Star of the Show:

Designing Spaces’ Laura LaNata gets together with Steve Sykes, Director of Power Marketing at Schneider Electric at a home in Nashville, Tennessee to see how we can protect our electrical devices and appliances from hidden electrical dangers. According to The Electrical Safety Foundation International, home electrical issues cause 53,000 fires and $1.4 billion in damage each year. Steve takes Laura through a home equipped with the latest technology to show how homeowners could upgrade their existing electrical system with the latest surge protection technology.
Electric Surge
Most of us are not aware of the electrical dangers in our homes. They are real, can be dangerous – but also can be prevented.
According to The Electrical Safety Foundation International, “Each year, home electrical problems account for an estimated 53,600 fires. These fires cause more than 500 deaths, 1,400 injuries and $1.4 billion in property damage.”
Do you think that…..
• Only old homes have electrical fire hazards?
• Your smoke alarm will protect your home from fire?
• Lightening is the cause of most electrical surges?
These are all common misconceptions. While surges can happen thanks to mother nature, there are also home-based actions that will produce surges. Imagine an air conditioner starting and you see the lights dim. That’s because of a large motor starting, which puts surges on the line. There are appliances that can actually place surges on the line, such as starting a blender, disposal or hair dryer.
Electronics operate within a window of voltage, and when you go above or below that, you can damage the electronic device, leading to a decreased life of that device.
Schneider Electric wants to help protect people and their homes from electrical dangers.
