Better Water Made Easy (Easy Pool Care)
There is nothing like a sparkling pristine swimming pool for relaxation and exercise, and good old fashion summertime family fun. But many pool owners are concerned with the amount of chlorine used in the water. Sparkling sanitary water is the goal, but how can this be achieved without the harsh effects of heavy chlorination. Ed Lightcap, Senior Account Manager with DuPont’s Recreational Water Business for over 18 years, lends his expertise to pool owners who want to take on pool maintenance as a DIY project. Ed introduces a homeowner to basic concepts of water quality, and factors that keep pool water sanitary, but without harsh chlorine side effects. There are three interrelated steps that are key to good pool care. Once understood, pool care is easy to do. Pools don’t have to be a lot of work. Pools should be fun and easy, they should improve the value to our lives, by adding recreation, improving our health, and bring families and friends closer together.
Clean Pool, Happy Swimmers
Summer is here and that means it’s time to jump into the swimming pool for cool and refreshing fun. Every pool owner wants their pool water to be pristine and crystal clear, without the harsh effects of too many chemicals.
Pool water can easily get dull and cloudy from contaminants from the environment (dust, bugs, leaves) and swimmers (sweat, body oils, cosmetics), which mix in with chlorine to produce what’s called combined chlorine, or chloramine. Chloramines produce that unpleasant “chlorine smell” and can cause irritation of the skin and nasal passages.
So, what’s a pool lover to do?
Cleaning product giant DuPont™ has some helpful suggestions for keeping a pool clean and sparkling with three easy steps that any pool owner can do themselves:
- Sanitation: Kills harmful micro-organisms and prevents illness from infection.
Keep a free chlorine sanitizer residual of between 1 and 3 parts per million (ppm) at all times and in all areas of the pool.
- Oxidation: Add an oxidizer like OXONE® to the water every 1-2 weeks. Oxidation removes non-living contaminants that make the water cloudy and produce bad odors. Using Oxone produces clear sparkling water with no irritation, and swimming can resume in 15 minutes.
- Water Balance: Maintaining proper levels of pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness prevents water from being corrosive and scale-forming, and also protects the pump and filter equipment. Check this monthly.
DuPont™ wants people who take care of pools to know that pool maintenance doesn’t have to be hard work or complicated, and can be done easily in less than 10 minutes a week.

DuPont™ Helps Pool Water Sparkle on Designing Spaces™ on Lifetime TV
Viewers will get tips on keeping pool water clean and clear on upcoming show
(Pompano Beach, FL – PR LOG/CISION - June 24, 2012) Pools should be fun and easy and improve the quality of life for the whole family, according to Dupont™. Tune in to popular home improvement show Designing Spaces™ on Lifetime television on Wednesday, June 27th at 7:30 a.m. (ET/PT) to hear tips and advice on what steps to take to keep pool water looking its best.
During the episode, “Easy Pool Care”, Ed Lightcap from DuPont’s Recreational Water Business will talk about 3 easy steps for better water quality: 1-Sanitation, 2-Oxidation, and 3-Water balance. Many pool owners over chlorinate, and Designing Spaces viewers will learn that chloramines, not chlorine alone actually causes the characteristic “chlorine smell”.
DuPont manufactures a chlorine-free oxidizer for swimming pools and hot tubs, called Oxone® which helps remove organic contaminants introduced by swimmers and the environment, like sweat and cosmetics, dust, dirt, and leaves – that build up and cause dull, cloudy water, and form odorous and irritating chloramines.
By following a few simple steps, most pool owners should be able to treat and take care of their pool water in about 10-15 minutes each week, says Lightcap.
“It’s been great having Ed Lightcap from DuPont™ on the show. With summer in full swing, our Designing Spaces pool owners will appreciate the step-by-step demonstration and great information on how easy it is to get their pool water to sparkle without too much chlorine for all to enjoy,” says Lysa Liemer, “Designing Spaces“ Executive VP of Programming and Chief Operating Officer.
