(DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – October 26, 2017) Designing Spaces®, the award-winning home improvement show, will air its “Aging in Place” makeover special episode this Friday, October 27, 2017, at 7:30 a.m. (ET/PT) on Lifetime®, with an encore presentation airing on November 3 at 7:30 a.m.
According to the U.S. Census, 46 million people aged 65 and up lived in the United States in 2014, and this same segment of the population will grow to 74 million in 2030. Most seniors would prefer to “age in place”—that is, remain in their own homes for as long as possible. The adult children of these seniors have concerns about their parents’ ability to maintain independence, from finances and living arrangements, to health and mobility, safety and caretaking.
“Aging in Place” host Alexis Abramson, PhD, is an experienced gerontologist who approaches this delicate situation from a holistic perspective, sharing her expertise with Florida couple John and Marianne Nicholas, along with their adult daughter Maureen.
John, 82, and Marianne, 79, enjoy the independence that comes with living in their own home. However, since Marianne suffered a near-fatal fall, life has changed for her and John, an avid golfer who now spends nearly all his time taking care of Marianne. Maureen also spends much of her free time helping take care of her parents.
The family is searching for ways to help them through the recovery process and beyond, and in-home care experts Comfort Keepers are there to provide the support they need. Representatives from Comfort Keepers assure the Nicholases that they can supply caregivers as often as the couple needs to offer care services and living assistance. Comfort Keepers’ goal is to allow seniors and disabled individuals to live as independently and possible, knowing that they are receiving the best care possible.
Also appearing on “Aging in Place” is TracFone, which furnishes a senior-friendly ZTE cell phone solution to fit the Nicholases’ needs. Like many seniors, John and Marianne aren’t the most tech-savvy and they can use all the savings they can get, so simplifying their cell phone situation while making it more affordable is the perfect solution.
Finally, ADT Health arrives at the Nicholas home to offer its medical alert necklace and monitoring, enabling John and Marianne the freedom to live independently with the peace of mind knowing that help is there at the push of a button. John is especially reassured that ADT’s fall detection system can detect if Marianne experiences a fall, even if she is unable to press the help button.
